“Action!” at photokina 2014

For some, it is an enrichment of their powers of creative expression; for others, a welcome opportunity to extend their business model. With photokina movie, photokina 2014 offers all visitors interested in filming a special section in Hall 4.1 customised to their needs, where professional users and ambitious film hobbyists can find information and further their skills. Awaiting them here are new products and developments as well as an eclectic programme featuring live sessions, lectures and workshops. Experts from platinum sponsors Zeiss and Blackmagic and gold sponsor Marcotec will ensure the professional quality of the stage programme.

Twice daily Marctec will show visitors on the movie stage (10:45 a.m. and 01:30 p.m.) how to use the correct equipment to make dynamic recordings or demonstrate how easy it is to use steady cams to achieve dynamic tracking shots and judder-free videos. The pros will demonstrate on-stage what equipment this really requires and what photographers should look out for when filming. The company will be assisted in this by professional film makers and cameramen from the USA, such as John Correira and Scott Coleman.

At 12:15 p.m. and 03:30 p.m. Carl Zeiss AG experts will demonstrate how to use Zeiss lenses and optics professionally to achieve optimal results. The speaker will be globally successful cameraman Nino Leitner. Visitors to movie stage at photokina 2014 will be able to hear the Austrian giving daily talks about film productions with various ZEISS lenses. In particular he will be talking about his work with a brand new family of ZEISS lenses, that especially lend themselves both to photography and video productions. The lectures are aimed at beginners and experienced filmmakers alike.

James Tonkin is a highly acclaimed cinematographer who has shot behind the scenes tour documentaries for artists including Robbie Williams, Coldplay and The Rolling Stones. Every day at 11:15 a.m. and02:30 p.m. in his presentation entitled “Introduction to cinematographic colour correction for photographers” he will be demonstrating how to process and improve film and video recordings for the video and cinema screen. He will use a 100% RAW workflow camera but also numerous other tools that will be familiar to the traditional photographer.

The action cam market having become hard to fathom and it not always being easy to find the right camera for the right job, we heartily recommend the lectures on 18 and19 September (both at 04:45 p.m.) to fans of fast-paced action cam footage. Joachim Sauer, editor in chief of VIDEOAKTIV.de, has the required perspective on the enormous range, selecting three top models and highlighting what you need to look out for when making a purchase, what accessories are useful and how easy post processing can be.
