photokina – world of imaging 2014 Aaaand…Action!

Cologne, August 2014

– photokina Action Zone – new attraction at photokina 2014, where action cams can be tested under realistic conditions
– SanDisk is sponsoring the memory cards: everyone can take the recordings they’ve made home with them
– Main sponsor of the “photokina action zone” is Google

It’s the trend gadget for every sport and outdoor fan: the action cam. In 2011, sales volumes in Germany were 30,000 units; just a year later they were 165,000 and in 2013 sales of these trendy recording devices to enthusiastic outdoor activists far outstripped the 300,000 mark. The recording device, which can be attached to almost anything, films action where it happens – close-up and always from the most exciting perspectives. The exciting recordings are shared via various social media channels and will be ‘liked’ immediately. photokina embraces this trend and will be unveiling a special highlight for “action image” fans at the world of imaging from 16-21 September with the photokina action zone.

And how better to test these cameras than “Live in Action”? That is why photokina isn’t confining itself merely to exhibiting the products but is enabling visitors to put the cameras through their paces at first hand. True to the dictum: borrow an action cam, try it out, join in and have fun.

There are three special fun attractions on offer that will make demands on products and visitors alike: sky-shooting entails “adrenalin junkies” having themselves catapulted high above photokina on the captive rope. Once at the top you could try to operate your camera’s shutter release at the right moment – a feat that should test even practised photographers. Equipped with the right action cam, however, accepting this challenge is a breeze: while moving up and down rapidly or being flipped back and forth, thrilling, funny and weird action movies can be recorded, which are then given to each participant – courtesy of card sponsor SanDisc.

Walking on water is the name of the game with photokina Aqua Zorbing. Contestants compete against other action fans while stuck inside a well-padded, water-filled ball, trying to be the first to reach the end of a 10-metre or so long swimming pool. Attached to the participant’s body, the camera films the live action within the water-filled ball close-up and delivers fun and splashy film sequences for both the participants and the spectators around the pool.

Last but not least: the bull-riding attraction allows visitors to prove how sure they are in the saddle, while capturing this on camera. The action cam will capture the spectacular rides and even more spectacular falls and provide fun galore later when watching them or sharing them with friends and family.

Red Bull Illume will take photography enthusiasts on a journey into the world of actions sports photography and explain how great ideas are turned into awesome sports photos. Among the athletes on-site are BMX flatland legend Viki Gomez (September, 16-17), who already delivered an excellent performance at the Red Bull Illume Winner Award Ceremony in Hong Kong, as well as basketball freestyle artist Surprise (September, 19-20).

The American Internet giant Google is co-sponsoring the photokina action zone with SanDisk. It is Google’s first time as an exhibitor at photokina. What the group will be presenting to photokina visitors in the action zone in addition to its regular business, Google hasn’t however yet revealed.
