Epson Joins with DonorsChoose.org to Help Teachers Add Much-Needed Technology and Supplies to Classrooms

Late last year Epson America partnered with online charityDonorsChoose.org 
for its annual holiday season initiative. Now in its second year of supporting the project, Epson helped to fund public school classrooms in need, by donating five percent of select purchases made on its online store – up to $100,000 – to support eligible classroom projects across America. The company also multiplies the reach of its donation through DonorsChoose.org's “Double Your Impact” program by matching donations.
Teachers from participating schools request needed materials and resources for their classrooms, and donors contribute to projects on the site. In the previous year, Epson reached its $100,000 goal and supported over 26,000 students in 323 DonorsChoose.org projects nationwide.
One of the beneficiaries was the PS 345 Patrolman Robert Bolden kindergarten classroom in Brooklyn, New York, whose teacher, Mrs. Griffin, was having problems retaining students' attention. Realizing that a projector might be the answer to her problems, she decided to apply to DonorsChoose.org as her school had limited funds. In less than a month, her project was funded and her class received an Epson VS210 LCD projector.
Together with Mrs. Griffin's imagination and intelligent application of technology, the projector transformed the class. Not only does she use the projector to transform books into mini-movies, but she projects interactive CDs to bring the math lessons to life. As a result, attendance has risen, tardiness has dropped and, most importantly, the children's schoolwork has improved. “It's not just one or two students; it's the class as a whole,” she said.
Mrs. Griffin says it best: “Now that we've got the projector, we can't live without it.”
Epson LabelWorks 400
East Millsboro Elementary School in Millsboro, Delaware, had very different requirements and selected the Epson LabelWorks 400 for its class of special needs children. Angela Hitchens, a special education teacher at the school, decided on the product because she thought it would help the students to have items in the classroom labeled.
It was a proud moment for Hitchens when she saw her students take ownership of the label maker. “It wasn't just something that I used. They were interacting with each other, and showing me where they thought labels were needed throughout the classroom. Seeing them problem-solve and use initiative is so wonderful.”
